The extraordinary nature of denial
The changing face of the world order
For the major port of 2018, headlines continuing to draw the world’s attention to the rise of nationalism on a global scale were being published daily, and I continued to ignore them, my beloved brain preferring to remain in a state of ignorance for fear of combating the evident truth: The political and social order of this world is changing
And I continued to ignore it.
Then came the Chemnitz far- right rallies in Germany, a country then impossible to associate with the far right and at that moment I found myself recalling the whole wide otherworldly plot where the top operative of the World Health Organization seemingly allows a virus to render more than half of the population infertile as an answer to the rising world population after continuing to deny a raving scientist of his efforts to combat the stated phenomenon
And yes this book was written by Dan Brown.
Denial is a fundamental human quality as it is easier to admit a person has gone bonkers rather than accept whatever is coming out of his mouth. In fact our history has been littered with instances of people ignoring other people, from the Catholic Church to the emperors of Rome, humans have preferred to define other humans as lunatics as they continued to deny in whatever pool of “the earth is at the center and that’s that” theories ( at least for the Church). Denial allows us to remain living in our bubble of comfort rather than confronting the truth.
If that’s not the case I would happily entertain alternate explanations but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that if denial didn’t exist there would be a million Greta Thunberg’s in this world.
We deny that we are spending an excessive amount of time with our dear partner-in-crime, the internet.
We deny (or some of us) the existence of mental illnesses
We deny the need to do something about global overpopulation (apart from distributing condoms in Africa only to have representatives of the Church to stomp all over them, I’m not kidding)
This article isn’t a tirade of insults towards the far right, it is an appeal to the younger generations (or the Gen Z, if you prefer) to not forget the past and work towards a world we would like to live in.
For an instagram post will ignite a spark in people but whole viable movements will effectively keep the fire burning.
